User Reviews about Sega Saturn System - Video Game Console

When Sega launched the Saturn, not too many people were impressed with its attempt at 3D rendering. After all, the architecture of the console was so complicated that few outside of Sega could ever properly program for it. Somewithin the company itself even fell short of utilizing this system to its full potential. Even so, it remains one of the most impressive, if not most successful consoles of all time.

It is not the Saturn's fault that the best of its games were left in Japan by their short-sighted management of the day. It delivered classic after classic, from Panzer Dragoon to NiGHTS, Dragon Force to Magic Knight RayEarth, Sword and Sorcery to Princess Crown, Psychic Assassin to Policenauts...and not forgetting the best fighters of the era (when combined with a RAM cart...) the Saturn deserved more than it received. It remains a system I play to this day, and will always treasure as a jewel in my collection. -- The Single Greatest 2D Console of All Time
This system was more durable, seemed to have better loading times, and better colors than that of the PSone. I have owned both, and the PS one was alot like the NES. Not very reliable but they had tons of third party. SEGA had lost costumers from it dabbling in the SEGA CD(sticker $300+ when new and Sonic CD/Ecco are the only games worth even playing)and then the 32X the year before.($150 new.brings the Gensis up to 32bit, the same as Saturn without the 3d engine, colors, or CD audio) So after dealing with this stuff people turned to off of SEGA. I mean they wanted us to pay 150 for the 32X, 300 for the sega cd, and the gensis.(100-in 95) So you spent 550+ and now a year latter they are telling you need to buy a new system for 300. WHATS?

Not for the system. The American markey never took to it. So if you have one or want one get a Japan mod cartridge. This will upgrade the Saturn to 38-bit and allows you to play Japans games. Like Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3. Virtua Fighter and Datona are two great games for the systems. And if you want to see how good this system was at 2D get Mortal Kombat 2. This is a arcade perfect port. This system I really perfer even over the N64. It is camp not, but does have some great 2D and early 3D games. -- Better then the PS one. Why did this system fall short?
so underrated and so underused....

Awesome (now) retro system, you should get one and play Radiant Silvergun, one of the best games of all time!

5 stars for a dead, but awesome system... get one cheap today! -- A shiner in your collection....
when the sega saturn came onto the scene in the mid 1990s, it got a lot of good reviews.

it was a great follow up to the STILL widly popular sega genesis. the saturn was a beefy 32 bit system with lots of gaming power.

the saturn was one of the FIRST gaming systems to dabble with internet gaming by using the sega net link system and keyboard you could surf the web and game online. even though it was limited it showed that sega was ahead of its time.(remember sega channel? )

the saturn boasts impressive graphics, sound, high quality sound...that even today sounds fantastic.

the saturn sold fairly well in the US i remember getting this for christmas . the saturn sold well but was fairly expensive(for the time anyway) it had much better success in europe and in japan

when the first playstation came onto the market, it beat the saturn in sales(a pity) and it gave gamers a run for their money..i had both at the time and to be honest i prefered the saturn better..as well as the contoller set up. so as usual the saturn fell victum to poor marketing etc while the psx soared.

i have various import games for my saturn ..thanks to a handy converter...ah the joys of gaming.

the saturn, was one of those systems that tried to recapture the success of the genesis...did they succeed? i think so. but Sony and Nintendo had better marketing and the poor saturn got lost in the shuffle..

the saturn had some awesome games such as Nights into dreams, galactic attack, Alien Trilogy, x men:children of the atom, Street fighter Alpha 2, Nightstalkers etc...not to mention awesome imports such as Gundam and various top notch MACROSS/ROBOTECH titles.

bottom line if your a sega fan, or looking for a great classic system..check out the saturn.. you wont regret it.. -- the Sega Saturn, an Incredible follow up to the genesis.
The Sega Saturn was the ultimate 2D gaming console it was released on May 11th 1995 3 or 4 months ahead of schedule the early release threw many 3rd party developers off it was released early to get an advantage over the Playstation 1 but it really hurt the system but in a dumb move by Sega they fired Tom Kalinskie & brought in a complete idiot Bernie Stolar he had horrible policies like no 2D games no RPG's. 2D games were the Saturn's bread and butter. Many games were cancelled or never brought over here. But this really underrated system had some good to killer games Die Hard arcade, Shinobi Legions Gurdian Heroes a great beat em up. A lot of arcade ports like Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter and the expensive light gun game House of the Dead . Expect some Saturn reviews. This is is really a beautiful 2D system. If you choose to buy it don't compare it with the PS1. I think if the God awful 32X had never been released and Tom Kalinskie had never been fired the Saturn would have been more competitive in the U.S -- Why the Sega Saturn was underrated. Also Action Replay plus is a must for the great imports from Japan
